Images taken from first filming day

The above are images which I took on my first day of filming. The images were taken with the intention of taking form of my digipak and promo poster. I did plan to take some shots on the same location in the day time but unfortunately, up to this point, I have been unable to meet with the model during the daytime. However, this is a scene I am hoping to film further during my music video and so will hopefully be able to take some daytime shots at some point in the near future.

First step i took in the creation of my album cover first draft was chosing the main image I would use. After careful consideration of my available options I decided on the following image:

The reason I chose this image was to reflect the story of the video. It promotes both the music video and the album itself. The audience is able to guess at what the hidden story is behind the main song before seeing the video or even hearing the sing. The idea of using a main image directly reflective of the music video is a technique used by a number of artist. An example of this would be Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream'

After choosing the main image I wished to use i could then turn to Photoshop in order to create an album cover from the image. Firstly I was required to crop the image into a conventional squared shape in order to create the album effect.

After this i could begin to add my desired text to the image. The style I decided on was fairly simple for my first draft and followed the structures of existing Bastille album covers by using the crossword technique (seen below).

However, despite the simplistic designs of these album covers the actual creation was a lot more difficult then I had first anticipated. The first step I took was to insert the name of the artist. This, however, was not as simple as typing the text onto the Photoshop program. Instead I decided on a font upon www.dafont.com. Dafont is a website full of many different font designs, from fancy to techno styles. The font I chose was within the 'basic' category in order to stick to the fairly simplistic font styles used throughout the alternative rock genre. The font was called Ethon and can be seen below:

From here i could then use the print screen function to paste it into the paint program and crop so only the word was visable and could, therefore, be entered directly onto my album cover.

After pasting the text onto my album cover I was required to remove the white background using the 'Magic Erase' tool.

In order to make the text stand out against the dark background I decided to change the colour of the text from black to white using the paint bucket tool. As well as this I also placed the test where it would fit in with the crossword structure. I also decided to stick with further conventions of Bastille by replacing the A within the bands name with a triangle.

After this I used the same font (Ethon) to insert the individual letters enabling me to create the cross word effect between Icarus and Bastille and eventually arriving at my first draft...

Video So Far

Below is my music video after the first days shooting. The black spaces represent the area I still need to film.

By research general digipak types I was able to find a structured list of 8 different types which are used within the music industry. This list was found on www.discwizards.com.

From this list I was then able to choose the preffered template I'd like to use. I therefore made the decision to go with the 6 panel Digipak, 2 CD template and so i will be working with the following layout...

Background Information on 'Icarus'

The Story of Icarus

In Greek mythology, Icarus is the son of the master craftsman Daedalus. The main story told about Icarus in his attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that his father constructed from feathers and wax. He ignored instructions not to fly too close to the sun, and the melting wax caused him to fall into the sea where he drowned. The myth shares thematic similarities with that of PhaĆ«thon—both are usually taken as tragic examples of hubris or failed ambition—and is often depicted in art.

The Lament for Icarus by H. J. Draper
Icarus's father Daedalus, a talented and remarkable Athenian craftsman, built the Labyrinth for King Minos of Crete near his palace at Knossos to imprison the Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull monster born of his wife and the Cretan bull. Minos imprisoned Daedalus himself in the labyrinth because he gave Minos' daughter, Ariadne, a clew (or ball of string) in order to help Theseus, the enemy of Minos, to survive the Labyrinth and defeat the Minotaur.
Daedalus fashioned two pairs of wings out of wax and feathers for himself and his son. Daedalus tried his wings first, but before taking off from the island, warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, nor too close to the sea, but to follow his path of flight. Overcome by the giddiness that flying lent him, Icarus soared through the sky curiously, but in the process he came too close to the sun, which melted the wax. Icarus kept flapping his wings but soon realized that he had no feathers left and that he was only flapping his bare arms, and so Icarus fell into the sea in the area which today bears his name, the Icarian Sea near Icaria, an island southwest of Samos.
Hellenistic writers give euhemerising variants in which the escape from Crete was actually by boat, provided by Pasiphaƫ, for which Daedalus invented the first sails, to outstrip Minos' pursuing galleys, and that Icarus fell overboard en route to Sicily and drowned. Heracles erected a tomb for him.

Bastille's Interpretation of Icarus

When asked about 'Icarus' Dan Smith, Bastille's lead vocalist, was quoted as saying “Icarus comes from things I feel about myself and other people that I know, I generally try not to write songs that seem too personal and sometimes use characters or stories to try and move the focus away from myself and from more obvious topics.” This clearly shows that Dan has tried to create his own story by the use of an old text. This reflects the postmodernism within the text. Bastille are inter textually referring to the story of Icarus whilst putting there own twist on the text. It is then down to me to try and interpret the text and reflect the hidden meaning within the music video.

Here I have experimented with different font types I could use on either my Digipak or Magazine advert. I gathered the collage of fonts using the website www.dafont.com.
